چکیده

conclusions elevated serum pth level was the predictive factor for nash in morbidly obese patients. also, we reported elevated serum liver enzymes, high serum pth levels and older age as predictors of nash in patients seeking obesity surgical treatments. results forty-six patients (34 women, aged 36.5 ± 10.6 years) were analyzed. the mean levels of liver enzymes were significantly higher in the group with nash (p value < 0.01). in an unadjusted logistic model, pth was the only variable in vitamin d endocrine system which was significantly associated with nash (odds ratio (or): 1.04, 95%ci: 1.01 - 1.07). after adjustment for possible confounding factors, age (or: 1.22, 95%ci: 1.00 - 1.50) and pth (or: 1.08, 95%ci: 1.01 - 1.16) were predictive factors for nash (p value < 0.05). patients and methods from december 09 to march 11, every patient undergoing bariatric surgery had a liver biopsy. nonalcoholic steatohepatitis was diagnosed using the lee’s criteria, the baseline labs obtained and the association between laboratory data and presence of nash assessed. objectives to investigate the role of vitamin d endocrine system in predicting the probability of presence of nash in asymptomatic morbidly obese candidates of bariatric surgery. background obesity as a worldwide health problem is associated with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (nash). since severe liver injury may be present in asymptomatic obese patients and a definite diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis can only be made after an invasive procedure of liver biopsy, there is a need for noninvasive methods to predict the probability of nash.

Parathyroid Hormone Levels May Predict Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis in Morbidly Obese Patients

Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH): Risk Factors in Morbidly Obese Patients

The aim was to investigate the prevalence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and risk factors for hepatic fibrosis in morbidly obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery. This retrospective study recruited all patients submitted to bariatric surgery from January 2007 to December 2012 at a reference attendance center of Southern Brazil. Clinical and biochemical data were studied as a fun...

New clinical score to diagnose nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in obese patients

BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most frequent disease associated with abnormal liver tests that is characterized by a wide spectrum of liver damage, ranging from simple macro vesicular steatosis to steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis or liver carcinoma. Liver biopsy is the most precise test to differentiate NASH from other stages of NAFLD, but it is an invasive and expe...

Noninvasive clinical model for the diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in overweight and morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND Liver biopsy, an invasive method, is the gold standard for differentiate nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) from other stages of fatty liver disease. A noninvasive test to diagnose NASH and disease severity before surgery and also for monitoring disease status after bariatric surgery (BS) will be an important medical challenge. AIM To create a noninvasive biomarkers model for the ...

Renal function and 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations predict parathyroid hormone levels in renal transplant patients.

BACKGROUND Recent guidelines suggest supplementation with ergocalciferol (vitamin D(2)) in chronic kidney disease stages 3 and 4 patients with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels <75 nmol/l. These guidelines are also applied to renal transplant patients. However, the prevalence rates of 25OHD deficiency and its association with PTH levels in renal tr...
